May 18, 2010 - Bus Crash Injures 16

Sixteen people were hospitalized in Philadelphia after a bus carrying temporary workers fishtailed into a utility pole at high speed, authorities said.

The driver told police the brakes had failed on an Interstate 95 exit ramp in the city, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday.

The top toward the back of the former school bus sheared off, throwing passengers into the street Monday, said Brett Cusatis, 26, a worker who was on the bus.

Cusatis, who landed on the pavement, and five other workers declined medical treatment. Sixteen other passengers were hospitalized, including one in critical condition at Hahnemann University Hospital, authorities said.

"I feel pretty lucky," Cusatis said.

The bus, owned by Del Val Staffing LLC, was taking workers home after a day of working at J&J Snack Foods. A Del Val staffing spokesman said the company had no comment.
